PRP Q&A

What is PRP?

As its name suggests, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a plasma that’s comprised primarily of platelets. Platelets are a component of your blood. Whenever you get hurt, your body directs these platelets to the injury site. There, they stimulate healing and help your blood clot.

The platelets work to promote healing because they’re rich in growth factors. These growth factors regulate cell division and cell growth. When introduced to an area that needs healing, the growth factors stimulate regeneration and support the creation of new, healthy tissue.

Dr. Knott derives the PRP by placing a small sample of your blood into a centrifuge. There, the platelets are separated from the other components of your blood so she can use it during treatment.

For years, doctors have offered their patients PRP injections for tendon injuries, joint pain, osteoarthritis, and more. But Dr. Knott believes that you should have access to this innovative treatment for your cosmetic goals, too, so she offers it for skin rejuvenation and hair restoration.

How does PRP work for skin rejuvenation?

Dr. Knott offers an innovative PRP facial. First, she prepares your skin with microneedling. Then, she applies the PRP so it can penetrate to the deeper layers of your skin.

As it does, it delivers growth factors. This stimulates the growth of new, healthy tissue, helping you defy aging. Additionally, the combination of microneedling and PRP can help to minimize the appearance of imperfections in your skin, like:

  • Acne scars
  • Fine lines
  • Age spots
  • Hyperpigmentation

In other words, Dr. Knott uses this treatment to reduce cosmetic problems while giving you healthy, glowing skin so you can look and feel your best.

How does PRP work for hair restoration?

At our Marin Skin location, Dr. Knott also offers PRP to address thinning hair and hair loss. During this treatment, she injects PRP into targeted locations across your scalp to suffuse the area with platelets and their growth factors. As these components reach your hair follicles, they increase blood flow and encourage regeneration in dormant hair follicles . This results in increased hair growth and thicker shafts of hair.

For the best results, Dr. Knott recommends a series of multiple treatments — usually three — spaced about a month apart. With multiple PRP treatments, you regain your ability to grow a full head of hair naturally.
